Ekam sat viprā bahudhā vadanti
This famous line in the Rig Veda (1.164.46) is anchored within a larger verse that names various deities like Indra, Mitra, Varuna, and Agni. Rather than promoting a system of competing gods or a rigid, exclusive monotheism, the full text reveals an ancient philosophy of monism. It establishes that existence itself is a singular tapestry (Sat), and the diverse elemental deities are merely different functional expressions, lenses, or names for this one ultimate reality.
The verse explains that Viprā—the realized sages and poets—use different names (bahudhā vadanti) simply because human language is too limited to capture the infinite. By equating radically different cosmic forces like fire, wind, and justice, the text provides a profound framework for universal tolerance. It teaches that diverse spiritual paths and interpretations do not contradict one another; instead, they complement each other to map out a grand reality that transcends any single definition.
